Black sky above

A poem

Staring at a blank page,
not unlike staring at the black
when you close your eyes,
has a certain spell to it.

No more trivial lights
traveling without purpose.
Red streaks won’t fill up the page.
No flair, no extravagant word
will ever make the cut.

There is a black sky above.
Mythical beasts and everyday objects
prop up in imagination
as if they carried any weight,
other than gravitational waves,
encompassed by a vast ocean of nothingness.

The ever-wandering planets
in their invisible path
won’t come out of their way
to provide you with meaning.

Your way, unlike the planet,
is not set.
As scary as it may seem,
no matter how much you deviate
your eyes from it’s event horizon
there is no escaping the truth.
The truth is
that the vast nothingness
will one day engulf you.

Look again at and into
that blackness above
and close your eyes.
The black sky stares
right back at you
from within.
